A MAN accused of the destructive ram raid at Echuca’s Intersport Bennetts is behind bars.

Detectives arrested Todd Van Roy, 28, at the Back 9 Golf Course earlier today.

The Tongala man has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, burglary, theft, criminal damage and arson of a motor vehicle.

Detective Senior Constable Peter Colliver of Echuca Criminal Investigation Unit said Van Roy was accused of stealing a Holden Rodeo ute from the shire office at Tongala last Wednesday before backing it through the Hare St shopfront about 4am last Friday.

The man allegedly stole $5000 worth of sports clothing before fleeing — leaving Bennetts with a $20,000 damage bill.

He is also accused of setting the ute on fire at Stewart’s Bridge Rd on Sunday night.

Police and CFA were alerted to the blaze at 11.50pm.

Van Roy is also charged with possessing methamphetamine as well as dangerous driving, evading police and criminal damage relating to an incident in Echuca yesterday.

Van Roy appeared in Echuca Magistrates Court today where he made no application for bail.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Echuca Magistrates Court on July 30.
