This week's edition of Best Battles sees Avenel hold off a fast-finishing Longwood, while Nagambie takes the four points in a classic over Rushworth.
AVENEL V LONGWOOD
Round six, 2011, at Longwood Recreation Reserve
Longwood 10.7 (67) lt Avenel 10.12 (72)
In their second meeting since Longwood joined the league, the Swans and Redlegs put on a spectacle for fans in this tight contest.
Wayward kicking in the final term from the Swans (1.5) - along with a pinpoint effort from the Redlegs (3.0) - gave the home side every chance of pulling off a win.
But the Swans proved clutch winners, finishing five points ahead of their rivals.
The Swans enjoyed a superior start, kicking four unanswered goals in the opening quarter, before the Redlegs began to make inroads in the third term.
Swans stalwart Paul Arandt kicked four goals for the visitors as Steven Potts finished best afield, while Longwood’s Jesse Robertson and Jac Smith-Williams also dazzled.
NAGAMBIE V RUSHWORTH
Round three, 2012, at Nagambie Recreation Reserve
Nagambie 15.11 (101) d Rushworth 13.9 (87)
This early season match-up for two finals-bound teams had the hallmarks of a great battle, its high score and tight margins having spectators on the edge of their seats.
While the Lakers amassed a match-winning lead over the four quarters, the margin rarely surpassed two goals as the Tigers remained in the hunt for most of the day.
Nagambie’s Grant Connors and Rushworth’s Lenard Clarke went goal-for-goal, kicking four big ones each, while Jackson Hutton and Nathan Gage skilfully patrolled their respective side's midfield.
